Calvin P. Applegate, 85 of Streator and formerly of Blackstone passed away Wednesday morning (Oct. 31st) at his home.
A visitation will be held on Saturday from 3PM to 6PM at the Winterrowd Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2PM at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Blackstone Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Streator American Legion post #217 and Streator VFW post #1492. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Houser, Chris Promenschenkel, Bill Evans. Charles Rinkenberger, Russ Antolik, and Bob Harcar. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Major Robert Andree, Eric Applegate, and Tom and Ryan Applegate, and friends, Walter Sandine and John Anderson.
Cal was born on December 22, 1926 to Roy and Beryl (Pierce) Applegate in Streator, IL.
He married Irma Notman on November 30, 1947. She survives.
Also surviving are children, Alan (Karen) Applegate of Bloomington, Steve (Vicky) Applegate of Pontiac, Shelly (Jim) Andree of Blackstone, and Tim (Julie) Applegate of Morris, 11 grandchildren, Melissa (Jason) Smallenberger and Lauren (Scott) Middleton both of Morton, Eric Applegate of Indianapolis, IN, Tom (Fiancee Jessica Temple) Applegate of Rockwall, TX, Ryan (Fiancee Natassia Gaznick) Applegate of Iowa City, IA, Sara (Glenn Cunningham) Perrotta of Streator, Major Robert (Jaymee ) Andree of Scott Air Force Base, Belleville, IL, Trisha (Nathan) Studnicki of Blackstone, Julie (Nathan) Matsko of Streator, Kelly (Brandon) Walker of Gridley, and Megan Applegate of Athens, OH, 12 great-grandchildren, sister, Joyce Shive of Mesa, AZ, nephew, Lee (Chris) Knuteson of Monroe, WS, and several nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Margaret Knuteson, and brother James.
Cal attended the Blackstone grade school and graduated from Streator High School in 1944. He attended Illinois Wesleyan and was associated with the Sigma Chi Fraternity until being inducted into the Army during World War II serving 1 year in Korea. He returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Irma Notman. They have enjoyed over 64 years together and raised 3 sons and a daughter.
He owned and operated Applegate T.V. and Appliance Business in Blackstone, IL for 35 years. He enjoyed many customers from an amazingly large area. His hobbies included woodworking, traveling, and bowling, but was happiest golfing or playing Euchre with his dear friends. He and Irma enjoyed watching the Chicago Bulls and Cubs.
Cal was a member of the American Legion post #217 in Streator. He was a member of the former Blackstone United Methodist Church which is now closed. He also served on the Blackstone Cemetery Board. He was the second member to join Twin Creeks Golf Course and enjoyed playing there for over 50 years.
