Carolyn S. Branz 1959-2013
Carolyn Sue (Burns)Branz, 53, of Streator, passed away Saturday, April 6, at her home surrounded by friends and family. She fought a long and extremely courageous battle with breast cancer and brain cancer.
Visitation will be at Winterrowd-Hagi funeral home Tuesday, April 9, from 4-7 p.m. A Christian funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at Central Church of Christ with a meal following the service. Cremation rites will follow. Burial will be at a later date.
Carolyn was born August 8, 1959 in Streator, Illinois to Arthur and Ethel (Carver)Burns. Carolyn attended local grade schools and was in the Class of â77 at Streator High School. As a single mother of four, Carol returned to school to get a teaching degree. She graduated with a 4.0 and a Bachelor of Science from Illinois State University in 1995. She started teaching at Northlawn Jr. High that fall and was employed there for 18 years until the time of her death.
Involved in the teachersâ union, Carol served as a building representative and also served a term as co-president of Streator Elementary Teachersâ Association. She was a former coach of volleyball at Northlawn Jr. High and Streator High School. Carol remained a positive force in her profession at all times. In her spare time, Carol was an avid golfer.
In June of 2011, Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends who loved and supported her for her two year battle. Carol realized the blessings in her life and in her struggle against cancer. Her strengths were her constant positive attitude, her sense of humor, her ability to befriend anyone she met, and her inner beauty. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed by everyone that knew her.
She is survived by her fiance, Greg Otto of Streator; son, David Branz of Streator; daughters, Kara Branz, Kenna Branz and Kelsie Allen of Streator; stepdaughter, Elizabeth (Allen)Dvorak of Wheaton; sisters, Dee(Bob) Leininger of Streator, Mary(Robert) Henson of Alabama; a brother, Roger Burns of Alabama; grandson Daxton David Branz; and granddaughter Chloe Lynn Zavada.
She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father Paul Hall, and nephew David Northrup, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer foundation, in Carolynâs name.
