Dorothy E. Walter, 96, of Grand Ridge passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Bethany Manor in Story City, Iowa. In recent years she has lived in the Ames area to be near her daughter.
A visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7PM at the Grand Ridge Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11AM at the Grand Ridge United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in Grand Rapids Cemetery in Grand Ridge.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Mervin and Betty Eutis, Active pallbearers will be Larry, John, Dean, Ralph, Clarence and Glen Walter and Craig Voights
Dorothy was born September 3, 1916 in Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa to William A. and Minnie (Gebhardt) Knoll. The family moved back to Fall River Township when she was a few months old.
She married Roy V. Walter on September 23, 1944 at her parentâs home in rural Ottawa. He passed away February 2, 1975.
Mrs. Walter is survived by one daughter June (Dale) Watson of Ames, IA; daughter-in-law Connie Walter of Grand Ridge, five grandchildren â Karen Perra of Peru, Paula (Darrell) Krohe of Streator, Sally (Ryan) Wenzel of Ladd, Jill (Ben) Malin of Maple Grove, MN and Derek Watson of Ankeny, IA; nine great-grandchildren â Warren, Lana and Leah Krohe, Brooke, Krista and Makenna Wenzel and Jonas and Elijah Malin; sister-in-law, Leola Knoll and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, sons Mark and Wayne, sister Shirley (Harold) Voights and brother William Knoll.
Dorothy graduated from Ottawa High School in 1934 and received a teaching certificate from Illinois State Univ. She taught at a rural school near Triumph, Covel Creek School in South Ottawa Township and in Marseilles at Lincoln School and Junior High School. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa. Since 1944 she has been a member of the Grand Ridge United Methodist Church and its Faith Circle. A charter member of both the Friends of Alsace and the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild she has researched all the branches of her family, her husbandâs family and that of her son-in-law since 1978. She compiled books on many of the branches, two of which the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, IN have copied for their library. She also entered the family records in the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City. She enjoyed many years of travel and attending Elderhostels, Home Extension, photography, sewing and baking.
Memorials may be directed to the Grand Ridge United Methodist Church, Grand Ridge Volunteer Fire Department or the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild.
