Edward G. Vanko, 89 of Streator passed away Saturday evening (June 27th).
A visitation will be held Friday from 9:30 â 11:00 AM at the Winterrowd Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 AM at the funeral home with Fr. Jacob Rose officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephenâs Cemetery.
Ed was born on July 18, 1925 in Streator to John and Suzanne Vanko. He married Dolores âTootyâ Smith on May 9, 1949. She passed away on May 7, 2013.
Surviving are daughters Janeen (Timothy Whetstine) Vanko of Elgin and Deborah (Wayne Bak) Vanko of Des Moines, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
Ed attended Streator Grade Schools and Streator High School and Browns Business College. In 1950 Ed worked for the National Academy of Sciences when the government was testing materials for the proposed Interstate highway system. He worked on a five year test project located between Ottawa and LaSalle. In 1963 Ed was elected to the Bruce Township Board serving 45 years as township clerk and trustee and was the City of Streator City Clerk. He also sold monuments for the Former Wagner Monuments and Schultz Monuments up until his failing health. One of his favorite hobbies was photography. He held a 4thdegree with the Knight of Columbus and was a member of the Streator Moose Lodge serving as Pilgrim
