He later began a business of his own, operating a Lincoln-Mercury and Minneapolis-Moline dealership in Streator at M & H Motors, with his brother-in-law, Robert Hogan.

In 1954, Eugene purchased the small local John Deere franchise and expanded it into Streator Implement, located on East Main Street. At age 60, Eugene left John Deere after 25 years to follow his passion and go into full-time farming. Eugene purchased what had been his grandfather's farm east of Streator, at a public auction, keeping the land in the Missel family. He was actively involved in farm operations for the rest of his life.

Missel; two grandsons, Jeff Pence and Darryl Pence; a granddaugther, Julie Missel in infancy; a great-grandson, Lucas Missel; son-in-law, Norman Pence; daughter-in-law, Lynn Missel; brothers Leonard, Cecil, Raymond, Edward and Lee; and sisters Lillian Hogan and Genelda Bundy Braunton.

For nearly 70 years, Eugene was a member of Central Church of Christ in Streator, where he had served as an elder and was the oldest active member. He was also a member of the La Salle County Farm Bureau. Eugene will be remembered for his service to God, his unwavering commitment to his family, his generosity, his sharp business mind, his sense of humor and his unforgettable smile.
