Mary L. Helander

Mary L. Helander, 83 of Streator passed away Thursday morning (Jan. 25th) at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa. 

A visitation will be held on Monday from 10AM-12Noon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12Noon at the church.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Winterrowd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Mary was born May 6, 1934 in Putnam, IL to Charles W. and Evalyn (Shatto) Heininger

She married Robert Helander on November 26, 1955.  He passed away September 20, 2016. 

Surviving are daughters, Susan and Kristina Helander both of Streator, brother, Lloyd Gasway of Alta Loma, CA and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, William B. Gasway, brother in infancy, Charles R. Heininger and sister-in-law, Nancy Gasway.

Mary graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1952.  

She was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, member of the Streator VFW Women’s Auxiliary where she served as past president. She volunteered many years at The Red Cross and St. Mary’s Hospital.  Mary also volunteered at the YMCA with the Tot Lot swimmers.  

Memorials may be directed to the family of Mary Helander for a memorial to be established at a later date.
