Mary Segovich
Loving Mother, Grandmother & Great-Grandmother
1923- 2012
Mary Segovich passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012. She was 89.
Mary was born to Andrew and Mary (Bednar) Majernik, Sr. on April 5, 1923. Mary graduated from St. Stephenâs Catholic School and attended Streator Township High School. During World War II, Mary worked at the Garter Factory and was an active member of the Canteen, serving coffee and doughnuts to servicemen as they passed through Streator on troop trains. Mary loved to dance and often danced with her friends at the Indian Acres Club, once whistling on stage with Lawrence Welk and his Orchestra.
She married her favorite dance partner and the love of her life, Fred Segovich, on May 17, 1947 in St. Stephens Church. Mary continued working at the Garter Factory until she and her husband started their family. They had four children: Fred Jr., John (Jack), Richard (Rick) and Laura. Mary was a devoted mother, enjoying her children at each time of their lives, always guiding them with a loving heart, and teaching them to be generous, kind, optimistic and to live a life filled with laughter and joy.
When all her children were in school, Mary began working part-time at John and Joe Florists, tending the plants in the greenhouse, creating bouquets, wiring and flocking Christmas trees, but never working the cash register because making change was her least favorite thing to do. She then worked at Northlawn Junior High School in the cafeteria as a cook and server. She loved the children and would often give them extra cookies or bread if they seemed to be particularly hungry, growing boys and girls. As the children grew, many of them would bump into Mary at a restaurant or other event and enjoying catching up with the âCafeteria Lady,â remembering her as someone who always had a smile and usually had an extra treat.
Mary retired from Northlawn in 1988 and spent her retirement years being a Mom and excellent Grandma. She was always at her grandchildrenâs sporting events, dance recitals, and school functions, smiling and cheering with pride and love. Mary also was a tireless volunteer at St. Stephens Parish, collecting paper and other goods for various drives. She always worked at the annual ârum-dumâ (rummage sale). She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and was a member of the group of women who baked rozeks and other Slovak treats for Christmas and Easter. When Mary could no longer roll the dough, she still came to the group to cut the butter and share good fellowship and laughter with her friends.
Mary loved sunshine, flowers, hot fudge sundaes, a good joke, telling stories, and giving hugs and kisses. She leaves this world a better place for having graced it with her smile and good nature for nearly 90 years. She has most certainly moved on to tending flowers in Heaven, baking some truly inspired rozek, sipping weak Lipton tea in the afternoon with our Blessed Mother, and dancing a perfect and graceful waltz with her beloved Fred in the celestial ballroom.
Mary was pre-deceased by her husband, Fred; her parents, Andrew and Mary Majernik, Sr; her brothers, Andrew Majernik, Jr. and John Majernik; and her sister, Anne Walling. She is survived by: her four children--Fred (Cathy) Segovich, Jr. of Champaign, IL; Jack (Lana) Segovich of Streator; Rick (Lori) Segovich of Ottawa; and Laura (Gary) Chiavini of Rochelle, IL; her 10 grandchildren--Keith (Alexis) Segovich of Lockport, IL; Ryan (Jamie) Segovich of Villa Park, IL; Kristin (Michael) Thies of New York, NY; Kelly Segovich of Streator; Joe Segovich of Bloomington; Paul Segovich of Ottawa; Katie (Shawn) Miller of Ottawa; Megan Chiavini of DeKalb; Nick and Ben Chiavini, both of Rochelle; and her three great-grandchildren--Gavin, Grace, and Sophia Segovich; sisters-in-law, Margaret Majernik and Donna Segovich; and nieces and nephews.
