Phyllis Jean Zurlinden

July 26, 1929 — August 27, 2013

Phyllis Jean Zurlinden, 84, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Heritage Health in Streator.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11am.Saturday at the Winterrowd Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 11am Saturday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Phillips Cemetery.

Phyllis was born July 26, 1929 in Streator, to Sarah Emma (Wilkerson-Stater) and James Madison Scrogham Jr. in Streator. She married the late Robert Zurlinden on November 27, 1947. He passed away October 6, 2012.

She is survived by her daughters Barbara (Gary) Robbins and Susan (Adam) Truchon, both of Streator; sons Steven (Cher) Zurlinden of Knoxville, TN, and Jeffrey (Susan) Zurlinden of Spring Grove, IL; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Brian Zurlinden, in infancy; a grandson, John Zurlinden; her parents; her brothers Ray, Roy, Ralph and Paul Scrogham, and John Stater; and sisters Clarissa and Pearl Scrogham, Lillian Hays, Ethel Walker, Edith Armstrong, and Leona Stogdill.

Phyllis attended Wilson Grade School and graduated from Streator High School in 1947. Before her marriage, she was employed by Owens Illinois Glass Company.

Phyllis was a member of the Streator Church of the Nazarene, where she served in various roles over the years including Sunday school teacher, children’s director, missionary president, and member of the church and Sunday school boards.  She also served as chairman of the Streator Christian Women’s Club.

Phyllis and her husband had a heart for missions and made many trips together with the Nazarene Work and Witness program.  Together they worked and ministered in several foreign countries including Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, South Africa, and Tobago.

Memorials may be directed to the Church of the Nazarene or American Diabetes Association.
